The Key To Limitless Creativity

If you are a regular reader of this blog, you know how much I like to write about creativity.  It's a passion of mine because I know so many people who sell themselves short when it comes to creativity.  Many have decided that "creativity is a gift reserved for the few."  This is simply not true - not if you serve GOD! Even the most creative human minds are finite.  The term finite means “having bounds or limits; not infinite; measurable.”  But God is infinite.  He is “far above all,” not limited by any boundaries at all.  When we draw […]

The Poison Of Procrastination

As I’ve talked to hundreds of people involved in kids’ ministries across the country, I’ve observed that there’s an epidemic of procrastination.  We excuse it in all kinds of ways, but all our reasons lead to the same result.  Yes, you have to be quick, and you never know what a kid is going to say or what kind of crazy thing will happen next.  But many kids’ leaders believe their enthusiastic personalities and the spontaneity of their ministry give them a license to walk in unprepared.  They try to get by, doing the least they can do, and it […]

FUN Friday: "Olympic Skiers Attacked By Star Wars Imperial Walkers"

I am sure you have all enjoyed the Winter Olympic coverage the past week.  Certainly, it is awesome to watch these incredible athletes accomplish things that most of us could only dream of doing. To go along with the Olympic theme, this week's FUN FRIDAY is one of the most creative Olympic Spoof videos I have seen.  Watch, as Star Wars' Imperial Walkers (AT-ATs) shoot lasers to disrupt Olympic hopefuls' chances at a gold medal.  It's all in fun, folks.  So, just laugh... http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_mKVJeA-wTw

"Heaven Is For Real" - Movie Review

I was honored to be sent a "screener" version of the upcoming film, "Heaven Is For Real."   I have to admit, I had not read the book, so I was coming from a completely open-minded position.  I was thoroughly impressed. This is, by far, one of the most entertaining, moving, and professional "Christian" movies I have ever seen.  Greg Kinnear (Oscar nominated actor) turns in a very emotional performance as Todd Burpo, a father/pastor who is faced with whether or not to believe his son's account of his "visit to Heaven."  The cast is solid, the acting is stellar, […]

Questions To Ask The References Of Kids Ministry Applicants

Safety and security are a BIG deal in Kids Ministry!  If the children are not safe and secure AND if the parents don't feel like the kids are safe and secure, you may never even have an opportunity to minister to those children.  Safety and security should be a high priority for EVERY Kids Ministry. Hopefully, each of you have a practice of requiring an application and background check for every volunteer who wants to work on your team.  Something that you may not do - ask for references.  On our application, we ask for three references of people NOT […]

FUN FRIDAY: "What If Conference Calls Happened In Real Life?"

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DYu_bGbZiiQ#t=210   If you have ever done participated in one of those dreaded "Conference Calls," you will absolutely laugh your head off at this hilarious video that depicts WHAT IF those conference calls took place (as is) in person.  HILARIOUS!

Why I Destroyed My Kids Ministry Stage

This past Sunday, at the end of our Kids Ministry service, I had over 50 volunteers grab sledgehammers, jigsaws, and various other power tools - then DESTROYED my Kids Ministry stage.  We did this even though we had one of the coolest, most colorful, thrilling Kids Ministry stages out there.  In fact, when other Kids Pastors learned I was destroying it - they couldn't believe it!  They said, "Why would you want to do this?  Kids Pastors come from all over the country to check out your stage.  It is overwhelmingly powerful in its presentation.  It's something that most of […]

FREE Kids Church Lesson For Valentine's Day Weekend

As most of you know, I am the founder of High Voltage Kids Ministry Resources.  We wanted to BLESS you with this FREE lesson from one of our Curriculum Packs. This lesson is perfect for the weekend of Valentine's Day. This is a lesson (previously released in our "Ten For Life" series) that teaches the children all about REAL LOVE. Nob on "The TEN Show" as Missy […]

FUN FRIDAY: Delta's On An 80's Trip!

I love creativity!  I especially love when someone can take something that has been around for years and give it a fresh, bold, creative twist so that it piques the interest of the audience once again. Delta has done exactly this with their "in-flight safety" instructional video.  Being a child of the 80's, it was fun to identify all of the wacky 80's references they showed:  ALF, Teddy Ruxpin, Rubik's Cube, Devo, and more!  See if you can find them all! Ask yourself, what is something in your Kids Ministry that can use a new dose of creativity?  What activity, […]

Disney Channel Introduces First Lesbian Couple On A Kids' Show

Yesterday, I posted on my Facebook page a link to an article about Disney Channel introducing it's first lesbian couple on a kids' show.  My goal was to share something that many may not have been aware of and to see what parents and Kids Ministry leaders thought about this decision by Disney and their show, "Good Luck, Charlie."  I got a lot of reaction - on both sides of the issue. Rather than respond to each comment, I thought it would be better if I fleshed out my thoughts here on the blog.  So, here are my random thoughts […]

Longevity In Ministry - The Benefits

This past weekend I had the privilege of being the keynote speaker at the Power Up conference in Southern California.  I was so blessed to meet two incredible individuals, both over 80 years old and STILL actively involved in Children's Ministry.  What truly blew me away was that even after 60+ years in Children's Ministry, they were both at a Conference ready and eager to learn. At this same conference, they honored a couple, Ron and Judy Radachy (pictured above), who had served 35 years in an inner-city ministry in Hollywood, CA.  It was such a blessing to see two […]

How To Talk To Kids About God

Recently, I spoke to our entire congregation about "How To Talk To Kids About God."  It seems that parents and grandparents have mystified the idea of having spiritual conversations about God.  They feel that they must have a Bachelor's Degree in Children's Education in order to have the expertise necessary to speak clearly to their children about the things of God. Unfortunately, we are often to blame.  For too long, the Church (and Children's Ministry Leaders specifically) has poised itself as "the official spiritual trainer of children."  This is definite far from the Biblical case that I lay out in the […]

FUN Friday: "Get Off The Phone!" Song

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nfUD0WhE264 Ever since I saw them perform as "The Fabulous Bentley Brothers" on Phil Vischer's "What's In The Bible?," I have been a huge fan of Rhett and Link.  These two guys have made a living creating hilarious videos for YouTube.  My son, Jordan, is one of their biggest fans. Rhett and Link are such talented guys.  Not only are they HILARIOUS, but they actually are very gifted songwriters and performers.  They have many parody songs that will make you laugh out loud.  This is definitely one of them!  The "Get Off The Phone!" Song is a humorous commentary on […]

What Do You Consider A "WIN" For Your Volunteers?

This past week, I was asked by a fellow Kids Pastor - "What do you consider a WIN for your volunteers?" I shared with him my thoughts and thought I would share them with you as well. Kid-Connection - When a volunteer gets to the point where their main focus when they are in Kids Church (or other area of Kidmin) is to connect with the kids that are present, rather than the other adults that are present, then we have a WIN!  We push our team to engage every child they can, learn their name, and find out what […]

FUN FRIDAY: "It's Not About The Nail!"

This is one of the funniest videos I have ever seen.  I was reminded of it last night at an event I attended, so I wanted to share it with those of you who may not have seen it yet.  It is certainly something that EVERY man can relate to.  A word of advice:  "Don't try to fix it, just listen."  (if only I would heed my own advice more often, LOL) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-4EDhdAHrOg

How To Deal With Impatience

Our culture breeds impatience.  Most of us have memories of feeling impatient from our earliest years.  You remember how you felt at Christmas, don’t you?  You begged your parents every day to let you open a present days (or even weeks) before Christmas.  You couldn’t wait to find out what was in those pretty packages. I have to admit that I’m not very patient.  I’m one of those people who stand at the microwave tapping his foot, wondering why the two minutes to cook a burrito is going by so slowly! I hate to wait in traffic.  I like to […]

Kids Ministry F.A.T. C.A.T.S.

The last few posts have been about the importance of building a team, but once you have made the choice to do ministry as a team, then you need to make sure you choose the right kind of people to be your Kidmin team members.  It’s not about just “getting a warm body to sit in this classroom with these kids.”  You want your team to be remarkable.  You want a bunch of F.A.T. C.A.T.S.! F – Faithful When you assemble your ministry team, look for those who are faithful.  Faithful people show up when they say they will, they […]

FUN FRIDAY: Coca Cola Parenthood Ad

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4sNlcwAh83Y If you haven't seen this ad by now, you owe it to yourself to watch!  It's a very real-to-life portrayal of the unpredictable roller-coaster that is Parenthood.  It will have you laughing and warm your heart all within one minute. It's a great reminder to those of us in Kids Ministry as well.  Kids Ministry is not all "neat and tidy."  Sometimes it can be a really messy job (and not only because of the messes that little ones can make).  In the end, the result is the JOY of knowing that you are affecting a life for eternity.  […]

Five Reasons To Have A "TEAM" Approach To Ministry

I have made a decision that I never want to do ministry alone.  Whenever possible, I try to make sure that I have someone with me.  If make a home visit, I bring someone along.  When I am speaking at a conference, I bring someone with me.  When I am visiting a child in the hospital, I bring someone along.  Every chance I get I want to add to the ministry team God has called me to lead. Reasons to have a team approach: 1)   Avoid Burnout If you insist on being "the man" or "the woman" in your Kids […]

Will You SLOW Down Or FALL Down?

It's the holiday season.  Christmas parties, outreaches, end of year budgets, family commitments, dinner parties, shopping, shopping, shopping...the list never ends! There's a reason why people use the phrase "hustle and bustle" when speaking of the holiday season.  It's the nature of the beast.  There's not a lot you can do about the stress and speed that the holidays bring...or is there? Something very important I have learned from my pastor (who learned it from Bill Hybels) is that there is a direct correlation between the SPEED of our lives and the DEPTH of our souls. There are seasons in our lives when […]

Eight Effective Ways To Partner With Parents

Family Ministry is slowly becoming the norm rather than the exception in the nation's growing churches.  Kids Ministry Leaders are finally coming to the realization that God has not called them to be the "Superhero" and primary spiritual in the lives of the children in their church.  Instead, they are recognizing the need to partner with parents, equipping them to step into their God-given role as primary spiritual leaders in the lives of their kids. You may ask, "But how?"  Many churches WANT to start this process of partnering with parents, but just have no idea where to start.  While […]

4 Important Questions To Ask When You Make A Huge Mistake

Do any of these scenarios sound familiar? *  You get caught off-guard by a parent who is upset about an issue regarding their child - you respond in a less-than-professional manner and really let your "humanity" show. *  You miscalculated the possible attendance to a big event (by over 100) and you don't have enough food, supplies, or volunteers to pull it off. *  You left your preparation for Kids Church until Saturday Night, then get hit with an unforeseen emergency.  You end up walking into Kids Church with NOTHING planned - and EVERYONE knows it! All of us face […]

Why I Won't Pray The "Sinner's Prayer" With Your Child

If you have been in Kids Ministry for very long, no doubt you have encountered this scenario already.  Church is over, a parent walks up and says, "Johnny was asking me questions about how to get saved last night.  Would you explain what salvation is all about and pray with him to receive Christ?”  For many years, I have the standard answer... "No, I won't." Now that you've decided I am a terrible Kids Pastor, let me explain.  When I first began in Kids Ministry, I would have answered differently.  After all, I was the resident "expert" on children’s spiritual […]

Run YOUR Race (Marathon Lessons pt. 5)

When I began this journey, my goal was to "finish a marathon."  I didn't have a goal to beat a certain race time or another racer.  I just wanted to finish! What happened along the way is just part of human nature.  I joined Nike Plus and started comparing my average minutes/mile with others.  In the half marathon race I ran during my training, I sprinted the last mile - all in an effort to BEAT a woman across the finish line.  My focus shifted from trying to complete a goal to trying to WIN the race by beating the […]

There's More Than One Way To Skin A Cat (Lessons from my marathon pt. 4)

When I set out to start training for my full marathon, I didn't put a lot of thought into how I would train.  I simply jumped on runnersworld.com and downloaded the most commonly used training program.  It basically focused on running four times per week, slowly increasing total miles run each week.  It was a common method, so I assumed it would work best. Well, it didn't.  Each time I got to the 13-14 mile range in my training, I suffered from the I.T. Band injury I spoke about in my second blog post on this series.  I began to […]

Think Small (Lessons from my marathon pt. 3)

Ever set a BIG goal?  If you are like me, you tend to choose HUGE goals that seem to overwhelm you.  Our tendency is to become emotionally overwhelmed by the audacity of the goal - sometimes resulting in abandoning the goal because "it is just too big." I was determined not to allow this to happen to me during my marathon training.  Keep in mind, I was trying to go from NOT running at all to running a marathon (26.2 miles) in only 6 months.  That's pretty audacious!  So, I took an approach that translates very well into just about […]

"Don't Quit!" (Lessons from my marathon pt. 2)

I began training for my marathon in March 2012.  I was growing stronger, getting faster, and covering greater distances.  I was feeling so "ready" that I decided to sign up for a Half Marathon a month and a half before my FULL Marathon was scheduled.  I was told to take it easy in this race, but of course I pushed myself further than I should have.  I ended up injured. I injured what's called the "I.T. Band," a tendon that connects your hip and your knee.  It made it impossible to run over 4 miles without sudden, sharp pain.  I […]

Lessons I Learned From My Marathon (pt. 1)

On November 2, 2013, I completed my first marathon - at the ripe old age of 40.  I definitely would not encourage anyone to wait until they are 40 to run their first, but I wouldn't take anything away from my experience.  It was an experience that changed my life - both the race and the training I went through to get there.  I learned a lot of lessons through this marathon. Over the next several blog posts, I would like to share with you some of those lessons.  I don't expect most of you to ever actually run a […]

Kids Sacrifice To Raise Over $6000 For Missions

I am so proud of our kids!  I have been the Kids Pastor at First NLR for the past 14 years and have been so amazed at the heart for missions that each child has cultivated. Last year, we took up an offering to drill a well in the African village where we had planted a church.  This year we discovered, although the people now had clean water, they had no clean containers to carry the water the often MILES from the well to their homes.  They were using animal skins and other contaminated containers.  So, I challenged our kids […]

Heartwarming Military Family Reunion

I was honored to be a part of this incredible moment.  My friend, Rocky, had been deployed for over six months.  He has three beautiful young daughters who love their Daddy very much.  They THOUGHT Daddy wasn't coming home for weeks.  We convinced them that we needed to shoot a video to send to him overseas.  I said, "Why not go to the airport where he's eventually going to come home and we can show him what it is going to look like when he eventually comes home."  The girls were all about it. In the middle of their video […]

Are You A "Self-Aware" Leader?

"What you can't see, you won't change!  What you won't change will become a habit!  Your habits will become a lifestyle!" Ever seen a situation like this:  A Children's Ministry Leader is convinced they have it going on and that their entire team respects them.  However, when you listen to their team and watch how they interact with them, it is obvious that their team has no respect for them.  The Children's Ministry Leader is convinced things couldn't be better.  The team is convinced things couldn't be worse. Leadership is hard.  If it were easy, everyone would be a stunning […]

They Are Not JUST Kids!

My friend, Mike Johnson (Director of Childhood Leadership Development at Fellowship Church in Grapevine, TX) recently posted this message.  It is a powerful reminder that every parent has the small window of opportunity to impact their kids for the Kingdom.  In fact, the window is even smaller than you might think.  Enjoy this message from Mike and be CHALLENGED to make the most of every opportunity you have with the children you serve! http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KEsqAs_LiZY#t=17

One Of The Most Selfless Acts Of Kindness I've Ever Witnessed

It was all I could do not to break into tears.  I had never seen such a beautiful display of God's love and kindness - not in a long time. Most likely, each of you reading this post have someone in your life who has suffered or is suffering from the horrible disease, Alzheimer's.  It is a brutal disease that attacks the brain in such a way that it robs people of their ability to function on their own, remember important things, and perform the simplest of tasks. In the video you are about to watch, a woman who has […]

My Child Was Caught Looking At Pornography! What Do I Do?

I received a tough email from a ministry friend this week.  It said, "I found out Sunday night that an 11 year old girl from my children's church is addicted to porn. I am totally shocked because she seemed so quiet and shy, I would like to know how to approach her and minister to her." Unfortunately, this is a situation that happens more often than we would like to admit.  With the literal explosion of technology (including hand-held mobile devices) in the world of kids in the last five years, children are being exposed (sometimes even accidentally through pop-ups […]

Is Your Pastor A Private Detective?

Accountability is something we often want from others, but we rarely want to give to others. On a ministry team, accountability is crucial for things to run smoothly. We understand this when it comes to those who are under us in the organization, but we don't always treat it with the same respect when it comes to our OWN accountability. I made a decision long ago to have a habit of offering accountability instead of forcing my pastor to require it. I don’t know of any senior pastor who enjoys going into private detective mode and tracking down any member […]
